  • "The results are amazing: I have had ongoing issues with tight calves and hips, and referring pain in my feet and back. Nearly all pain is gone and my mobility is completely restored. I am an avid hiker and this has made me look forward to moving my body again!" – Suzy

As a Registered Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, I place fine, one-time use sterile needles in specific points throughout the body to stimulate it to return to its normal, healthy function. These needles communicate with your body’s nervous system and endocrine system. In a very gentle and effective way your body is being instructed to do its own healing.

More Information About Acupuncture

  • Everyone’s needling experience is different. Most patients can feel the initial insertion of the needles with minimal sensation and some do not feel anything at all. Once the needles are in, there should be no pain. If you feel hesitant in trying acupuncture, we can explore ear seeds, dermal needles, cupping and gua sha.

I may invite you to try a needle and see for yourself how gentle they can be. I take great care in being sensitive to the discomfort a patient may have around particular areas being treated and in following through on an approach that works for you.

  • Needles are sterile, stainless steel and one time use. They have a sharp point and are not hollow (like a hypodermic needle). Practicing acupuncturists in British Columbia must be licensed by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine to operate. In addition to passing a pan-Canadian board exam, safety exams are part of the requirements to practice.

  • An initial session begins with a review of your intake form. We’ll spend up to 40 minutes discussing your medical history and anything else that may be relevant to your health concerns. After a diagnosis is made, you get to relax on the table face up or down. Fine needles are inserted and you have a chance to relax for 30-40 minutes. Other modalities such as cupping, electro stimulation, gua-sha may be included which we would discuss beforehand.

  • A Western approach to treating muscular pain and tightness is called dry needling or IMS.  Instead of using Chinese Medicine theory to decide where to treat, motor and trigger points are used to enhance communication between nerves and muscle. Interestingly enough, there are acupuncture points which overlap with these point locations. Both approaches are excellent and depending on what is occurring for you, I might use one or both methods. Read more about dry needling/IMS.

  • Acupuncture treatments work best as a succession of several treatments. Acute issues may be resolved in 1-3 treatments. More chronic conditions may take a few months to treat. If we are focused on a particular concern, one treatment a week may be optimal. Some patients come in for health maintenance once to twice a month.

For chronic conditions, I invite you to consider how long it took for your illness to develop. Sometimes it has been months or years. This length of time may be reflected in how long it will take to resolve your issue. The earlier you begin treatment, the more likely you are to prevent a short-term issue from turning into a long-term issue.
